Not me and only when they're noisy Buddy, it's not an easy job on a Scout,.....correction,.....it's not a quick job,....... Alpal
Or cheap mate, that's why I'm asking. No noise, no need to tear it apart that's my way of thinking. Cheers.
You got it,.... If it ain't broke,.....don't fix it,..... Alpal PS,.......my first Scout was super quiet but this one does have one noisy tappity - tap,.....which is going to stay there,.....should it get louder,.....then I'll do something about it,.....
Mine were checked but no adjustment needed at 20,000 Miles.. My last Free Service with Indian of Ocala .. Although main reason kept the Dyna over the Scout was offered a much better Trade In for the Scout .. But my knowledge of working on HD's up to rebuilding or replacing the engine without having to pay Big Bucks was a Strong Second .. While had a Scout Manual, some of their maintenance stuff still looked Greek to me ..
I'm also interested in those who've checked (or had someone check) valve clearances. FYI on these bikes the valves are unlikely to get noisy. Generally the clearance will close up as the valve and seat wear. I'm "due" to check, and when it gets warm I may just pull the covers. But I have a suspicion they won't have moved much. I wonder how Brian Meyer (?) did before he moved. He was over the 60,000 mile mark.
Had my valve clearances checked by dealer at 32000km service. He replaced 7 of the 8 bucket shims which were out of spec. I am informed this is typical. Very very very expensive exercise! but necessary.
My experience with these is if you don't hear them rattle,.......leave them well alone,.....that said I have one that talks to me but I don't listen,.......currently,.......( 18000 miles and climbing,....)
According to the manual 20,000 miles is the golden number .... at least it is for Indian and the wrench!
I'll see who's talking to who at 20,000 miles,.....the noise in my ear or the pain in my wallet,....... Alpal
Rodd, did your shop tell you if they were loose or tight? And did you hear a rattle (loose) or have any idle problems when warm (tight)?
Going on 50,000 km unchecked, no issues yet. Starts, runs, and sounds no different than Day 1. I'll let talk know if she blows up.
Rodd, that is very interesting. I would expect the valves to get tighter on a Scout, and loose valves would not bother me too much. Sure would like to see how the cams and lifters looked .
Tappy,........been like it since I got the bike in 2017. Was very noticeable at first because my first Scout was so quiet in that department. Alpal
