I've been thinking about the Challenger and the Springfield for a while myself. And crosswinds are one of the reasons I considered the Challenger, since my wife's family lives in one of the windiest cities in the country.
I'm 6' 2" (188 cm) My foot is flat in the picture. I definately could feel the difference in the lower seat compared to my RM. I can flat foot that too but not a lot of bend in the knee.
Why is the Challenger better in a crosswind? Looks like that big fairing sticking out front would catch more wind than the Chieftains fairing would.
The combination of the fairing being frame-mounted (as opposed to fork-mounted) and the more "pointy" aerodynamics, as far as I know. Also the weight, if comparing with a smaller bike. Not the case when comparing with a Chieftain, of course. Ooooh, sneaky!!!
No. I haven't got the answer back from the insurance if the RM is totaled. In the interim I bought a ST1300 from a friend who had excess bikes. I go up to Idaho to pick it up in a couple weeks. I'll ride it until I can find a good deal on a '21 or newer Challenger. And of course I have the trusty KLR as a run-around in the meantime.
My hope is that they total the RM and let me buy it back. Then I could buy a Challenger for the long trips and strip the RM down for a knock-around ride for local trips.
That would be interesting. I was thinking that with all the electronics, I would need to replace the fairing and make a chieftain out of it.
