lightbulbs for breakfast 4T???,......don't you sweat it Buddy,......pics are on the way,........just as soon as I get out of bed,......I mean it's still early in the day,.....just gone 10.35am,.....,....... Alpal
Ok, it’s 10.50am now and here is proof of fitment! Had Steph hold the throttle open when I took this one! Free wheeling beast huh?! slowing down now,…….. turned off,…..who said Scouts can’t rev!!!! Guess whose loving his new tachometer!,…….oh,….yeah…..I think someone said they were disappointed the original tacho readout no longer worked,…….mine does,….. I was concerned at first before I turned it on. My Scout is one of the Demo ones that was sent out from the States and I have found differences in the wiring. After all the Demos were a preproduction bike and they were not totally the same as the later production models. So with a little anxiety I turned the key and was relieved to see no smoke rising from the wiring loom or gauges!!! Alpal
Oooh, thank you! I know you despise to have to ride it, so I really appreciate the sacrifice you're making just to appease me with some pictures.
@Alpal I was the one saying that I was surprised to see no tach on the original gauge cluster after adding the external tach. So, how accurate is the new one when you compare the two? Was it worth the $$ in your opinion? Warming up that dremel? 4T
I read somewhere that the new analog tachometer is way more precise than the integrated digital one, but have no personal experience with it.
Hi Guys, Yes I HATE going out on the Scout, really do!,.....As far as I can tell they are both either exactly the same or very close together in readings.,.......They no doubt run off the same system so how can they be different? Was it worth it?,.....In my opinion it is worth the expense as I love the look and the ability to see both speedo and tacho at the same time. Have to go to Wanganui this morning but a ride is on the cards this afternoon. Using the car first as a faulty vacuum cleaner will not fit on the Scout. Alpal
Pics as promised!,..... here you go!,.....Alpal's very first "Selfie!" Note the Hellibars and the lower wind deflectors, provided by the Govt after that Horse incident. Love the gauge already!,......Also note the Avon handgrips complete with cramp buster, the mini running boards supplied by a good man in Gort all topped off with the Memphis Shades screen,..... Alpal
That's the same thing I thought, but I read someone say that he found the analog one to be way more precise. I really don't know, as I'm not talking from personal experience, and honestly don't reacall where I read that or from whom. Woooooooooow!!! Very nice looking!!! Love the red gradient on the windshield, and the Brave Wolf decal also looks great. Also, really like that the floorboards are not too big and... well... just the whole look of the bike!
Thanks Bud,......One thing on the tacho,.....The digital readout reads in jumps of 50rpm so they are never going to read quite exactly but then, when you are doing 100 MPH, are you really going to be thinking am I doing 5550 RPM or 5600 RPM,.....I think not,... Alpal
So I understand that both tachs get the info from the same system, but my thought was the digital could be calibrated wrong? Maybe I am way off base here. You are correct, at 100 MPH we probably should be looking at something other than the tach. If you say the new tach is reasonably close to the original, that is good enough for me. Thank you for the response. How was that ride? Do you catch yourself looking at the tach more now? 4T
Hi 4T,..... The ride was great as always,.....No!,..wait it was horrible, right?,.....hate riding! Isn't that right @Yirkash ??,...(),....just a quick blast of about 30 miles and back home via twisty backroads. What I am looking forward to is a bigger ride where the bike gets up to full temp all over as I have noticed that on bigger trips as I overtake vehicles I have detected what appears to sound like an over revving of the engine,....indicating a possible slipping clutch. The digital readout is, for my eyes, too small and difficult to read while carrying out such manoeuvres where as checking out the dial tacho will be so much easier. I do have a ride coming up with Cousin Neil ( see that @Quinn_the_Eskimo ?,....another cousin!!! ,...right side of the family too, ) which will no doubt be a 2 to 3 hundred miler so plenty of opportunities to test it out. Incredibly I am the 6th owner of this Demo Scout. I am sure previous owners bought as a show pony rather than a work horse with some of them doing only 80 kilometres before selling on to the next would be tough biker. The owner before me did do a 1,000 K's before deciding he liked his cars and hotrods better. The Scout was occupying space he wanted for another 30's odd Ford so as a test, like putting a toe in the water, he put the Scout on Trade Me to see if he got a bite,......He did,......in less than 15 minutes! We came to a price suitable to both of us and the deal was done. I was still recovering from the horse incident so Andy, another biker friend offered to take me up to Turanga and trailer it home. So,......in this long convoluted story of a slipping clutch in a bike of five previous owners, I don't know how they were treating it. Were they laying rubber to impress the girls?,........Doing wheel stands on a bike most capable of doing so?,.....I have at times myself lifted the front wheel some distance off the ground while shutting down a couple of cage drivers who thought their cars were hot stuff,......I got, in both cases, the bigger fright but luckily they couldn't see that! When I got the Scout ( Nov 2017 ) it had done a mere 1800 kilometres! And because of a dealer botch up still had one year of warranty left,.....which worked out fine as it had a leaking oil seal where the gear change shaft enters the crankcase. The warranty should have expired 6 months earlier than that. So I got a previous 5 owner bike with roughly only 1120 miles on the clock,......could say I was pretty pleased,....... And yeah, I looked down frequently at the tacho,......looks cool, is cool and has that beautiful red glow at night,......which does not bother me as it does some riders,.... Alpal
Yep, thought as much. It's so kind of you to put yourself through such an ordeal just for our sake!! Wow, very interesting story. I recall once watching a YouTube video of a guy chastising people for making fun of weekend warriors. He said we should be grateful of them, because they're a nice source of cheaper, well-mantained and hardly-ever ridden bikes! I like the red glow, from the few pics I've seen. I kinda would enjoy the main gauge to have a red back light by night. I enjoy the feeling of riding in the dark, and a red light is less obtrussive.
