Here are some pics from the Iron Butt I rode in Friday April 30. 1,000 miles in 18:45 minutes. We had two groups of 10 bikes. Our group finished with 9, as one person had to peel off to handle a home situation. Chill after party May 1 at American Biker in Ladsen, SC (Charleston).

The one Ride Command pic is mileage for the entire weekend - from home and back.

Lastly, I'm not a Purple Heart recipient. Rick was, and I bought this bike from his widow. I met Rick briefly at the 1st Inaugural Indian Motorcycle Pow Wow (he rode a beautiful Springfield then). I got a real good deal on the bike (had 4330 miles on it). I told her I would have a memorial to Rick painted on the tank (did May of 19'). He had the Purple Heart Motor Dog 69 medallion on the gas cap (which flew off a few months ago, so I replaced it). I also carry a pic of him on the bike at all times. - John

Frankly it's a challenge...I am one of those that has fallen asleep riding...so I have to plan to NOT allow that to happen. I will sip a 5 Hour Energy and try to stay ahead of the drowsy cycle.....also, I only eat natural sugars (fruit) during the ride.....nuts....stay away from complex carbs....and stay hydrated.

It will be my last Iron Butt, unless I construct my own crew to ride with....I can't handle ridng with people that have no concept of group riding...and as a tail gunner I have to deal with the BS. Mostly getting too spread out and not keeping pace with the people in front of you. As dangerous as following too close.....

True. The entire key on a 1,000 mile schlep within a given time period is to maintain....caffeine peak at the wrong time can be disasterous.

I hear ya their. I would do my "combo" of 5 hour energy and coffee around 3:00am to get me to sunrise. After that I was fine.

Typically (oddly), my 'crash time' usually happens when its hot and humid...direct sunlight. The wind and thump of the engine lulls me to sleep.....I actually have nodded off...with and without a passenger....luckily not to the point of having an accident.

Doublej, if you're serious about starting a crew let me know. I'll be completing my first documented Iron Butt ride in October but have knocked out a couple unofficial rides over the past few years. Hell, even if your done with rides for patches, I'm looking for like minded individuals to do some long rides with next year. I've lived too long to have seen and experienced so little of our country.

I'm probably done with Iron Butt rides. Anything beyond 250-300ish miles per day feels like work to me. If it's a ".....I have to get there..." situation, that's different.

I'm totally interested in planning/joining some long bike trips, but every day will not be Iron Butt pace. I have a 400+ mile trip coming up soon and plan on taking two days to get there, and another two days coming home- all back roads. Ride Safe- JJ
