Hi to all you Scout owners out there. My Scout is just a month away from getting what is called here in Burtland,....a WOF or warrant of fitness. It is a yearly check of the bike to ensure all is well and safe but my rear tyre will not make it this year. I have been using Continental Milestones on all my bikes for at least 20 years. They had great grip on the road and would give me between 16,000 and 18,000 miles ( rear ) before changing but Conti got rid of them replacing them with a Conti Tour,........which is returning just over 6,000 miles LESS than the old Milestones. So yeah,......I am in the market for new back tyre,.... So Guys, yours thoughts and experience please,.....on which brand of tyre is going to give me excellent grip as well as a good return, mileage wise,...... I look forward to your replies. Regards, Alpal
There isn't one. Want excellent grip = sacrifice longivity. Want long tyre life = less grip. Middle ground, Metzler Cruisetec, Commander 3's.
a reply!!! wonderful! and from a Kiwi too!!,.......I guess all the US Scout owners are still running on Kenda's which must have been different to ours cos they haven't worn out yet!!!!,......( Relax fellas,.....only joking,.....) The Conti Milestones were the only tyre that I found gave you the best of both worlds Muz, but sadly they are gone, so,.....guess I am looking at your suggestions,.........still all ears if anyone else wished to chip in,...... Alpal
Dont make long term tyres anymore no money in that idea. Don't matter what you buy you will be lucky to get 12000ks from any thing nowadays.
Even the made in Korea rear Conti Tour, ( their new cruiser tyre ) has given me 10,000 miles but NOT the 16,000 to 18,000 miles the Milestones did,......
For the 25,000 miles had on my Scout my absolute favorite was the Pirelli Night Dragons with the Michelin Commanders a very close 2nd ..
Thanks Jay,....so the grip was good?,.. and do you recall what mileage you from the rear? The front on mine have usually done about 5,000 more miles than the rear,..... Alpal
Yo @JayFL459 !,.......took your advice and am getting a Commander111 fitted next Tuesday. Boy! the prices varied,.....No names, no pack drill,.....the worst was $450 for the tyre and $144 to fit, another was $303 for the tyre and $100 to fit and the last place I checked was $295 for the tyre and $90 to fit so number three got the job. They just happen to be the Indian dealer in Wellington,.....Yes, I have to ride a 100 miles to get it done but I am looking forward to the toot and besides,....by the time I'm home again,.....it's run in! Still be interested in what mileage you got from the rear if you have the details,..... Thanks Buddy,.....You always seem to be helping me out Alpal
Varied 5-10K depending on the roads and speed .. Picture from the past below, the Commander Front Tyre with 8,000 Miles ..
That tyre is looking good Jay,....8,000 and lots more to go,......I will be interested to see how many miles I get from the Commander 111,..... And Muz!,.....I have,.....Travelling down to Wellington with cousin Neil to get it fitted next Tuesday,......am looking forward to a good chat with Neil,.....his dad, my Uncle Ron passed away on the 18th,.......I really miss him,....He's been in my life since memories started happening,.....Funny thing,.....Neil is a councillor but who does HE talk to in moments like this? He has been stiff upper lip since it happened so I felt a ride and a chat over coffee while we waited might be a good thing,..... Alpal
Just Ordered a Michelin Commander III for the Rebel .. The Front made such a handling improvement am sure the Rear will add a bit of traction as and lean as well ..
Not bad mate. Only around 70 bikes due to the weather. Lady called Tracey won best ladies bike with her Scout. Blue one. Bought it from the old fulla who came on our first Scout coffee meet at Taihape. I've forgotten his name now. I had a few showers on the way down and again 10km from home. Good people hosting the show, no massive Testosterone HD guys present so had a really good vibe. Killswitch donated 3 Eagle Lights tee shirts and 3 $50 discount vouchers. I'll be going next year as well. if you want a good bunch of people to ride around for coffee, lunch, I would recommend joining Riders Against Cancer. Based not far from you.
The old fella's name was/is Harry Madden and yes, he sold his red, white and blue Scout to Tracy. She also has a black Scout and she put Harry's very loud Vance and Hines pipes I think they are, onto it. I've been told that if she rides with a group she has been told she must be tail end Charlie. She was the one who alerted me to those super cheap Scout saddle bags on trade me. Her and her hubby bought two Scout air filters off me as well as two Indian jackets I bought from this forum,.....Nice people...... that riders group is run by BIG Ian, yeah?,....lives in Wanganui?,.....If so, have met him out and about a couple of times. He had a Scout before his big sister bike. Imagine!,.....6ft 6 inches on a Scout!!,,..He did make it look small! but he loved it! Met him at BP Bulls a few weeks back and he said he would let me know when they had rides going by telling you and having you contact me because I'm not on Facebook or Twitter,.....You know about that? Oh yeah,.....still working on those part numbers,...,....Steph has had me out in the garden over the last few days,.....( yes, I know,....that could have been worded differently,...I expect there will be incoming!!! ). Been on a couple of trips about the place, 80 miles being the longest and all is well with those new connectors. Off to TSS tomorrow morning with cousin Neil to have that rear tyre fitted. take care, ride safe! Hi Patty!! Alpal
As far as tyres go, haven't had my Scout long enough to change the tyres yet. Got Night Dragons and they're nice, but I do feel they don't have as much grip on a wet road as others I've tried. I've usually had Pirellis or Michelins on all my previous bikes.
Had the big ride yesterday down to Wellington and had a Commander 111 fitted to the Scout rear. Man! that's deep tread groves in those things! I do wonder what it will be like in the wet however as there is such a wide area in the centre with no sluicing grooves to wicker away the water,......Time and a wet day will reveal all I guess,....The ride down and back was great,....Had cousin Neil with me on his new Honda 750,.....Such a strange bike for him to buy after owning the latest Rocket 3 but hey! it's two wheels and we had a ball! I honestly think he needed it, a day in the sun and a blast on the bike to clear his head as his Dad, my Uncle Ron died last month. It was a fun ride home, we stopped at weird places, ate absolutely crap food, sat in the shade at Raumati Beach and spoke of Uncle Ron and also his daughter, my cousin Colleen who had died just 3 months earlier. Tough year for the Pedley's and the Hansen's. We were as thick as thieves as kids and still are again after many years separated. It is so great to be closely connected again, me, Neil and his remaining sister, Lorraine. But I digress,......What are the Commanders like for you in the rain Yirkash? Alpal
Sorry about your uncle and cousing, but glad you managed to reconnect with Neil. As far as the Michelins, they weren't the current Commanders, but I can't recall what number they were. They were on my previous bike, Aeryn, a Honda Shadow. But I felt like they had better grip in the rain than the Night Dragons I'm currently using on Octavia, the Scout. All in all, though, I do like the Pirellis. Just have a feeling that I should be a little more careful on a wet road than before. But it could also be me, or the fact that it's a different bike, or who knows... These things are very subjective sometimes...
The Absolute Best Gripping Tyre I have tried was Avon Cobras but at the Cost and Tread Life Thought the Pirellis or Michelin were a better choice unless I truly lived in the heart of the mountains and goat paths and rode them every day .. Only got 6,000 miles on the Rear and not a lot more on the front ..Cooper Tire USA has bought them out to my understanding but am told by a riding friend in England that they are still made in the UK .. But if Grip is your #1 Priority with price no option never rode on anything better ..
