Harley-Davidson will make small motorcycles in China with a new partner
    By Julia Horowitz, CNN Business
Updated 9:34 AM EDT, Wed June 19, 2019
London(CNN Business)Harley-Davidson has found a new partner in China as it ramps up efforts to sell more motorcycles abroad.

The company said Wednesday that it's teaming up with Qianjiang Motorcycle Company to make a small motorcycle that will go on sale in the country next year. Qianjiang is a subsidiary of Geely, which owns Volvo and has a joint venture to assemble cars in China with Mercedes Benz parent company Daimler(DDAIF).

For Harley, China is a major growth market.

Sales in the country increased 27% in 2018 compared to the previous year, according to the American motorcycle maker.

    Growing internationally
Harley-Davidson (HOG) wants half of its sales to come from international markets by 2027. This strategy aims to offset declining US sales as its customer base there gets older.

The company has been increasing production in places like Thailand to make that happen.

But tariffs have also played a role in its plans to make more bikes in Asia.

The company said last year it was movingsome manufacturing to Thailand due to European Union tariffs on motorcycles shipped from the United States. The European Union raised its 6% tariff to 31% last June in response to the Trump administration's tariffs on steel and aluminum imports.

Harley-Davidson has struck a partnership to start making a small motorcycle in China for sale in the country.

"It's unfortunate, but we're pushing forward with our strategy to make sure that we preserve the integrity and the growth potential within the European market," CEO Matthew Levatich said on the company's most recent earnings call.

The Thailand plant also makes motorcycles for sale in Asia. It will begin shipping motorcycles to China by the end of the year.

Harley's shift overseas has angered President Donald Trump, who last year encouraged consumers to boycott the company as a result.

"Most other companies are coming in our direction, including Harley competitors," he tweeted at the time. "A really bad move! U.S. will soon have a level playing field, or better."

It's not clear if the Harley motorcycle that will be made in China would have been subject to Chinese tariffs had it been manufactured in the United States. A spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping are due to meet on the sidelines of a G20 summit in Japan later this month as they seek to avoid further escalating their damaging trade war.

Reagan was a heck of a good speaker and statesman.
We have so many anti free enterprise- anti business losers in congress and in various state governments now...its disgusting.

Harley won't make a thing. This is a rebadged Benelli, made by Geely (owner of Saab) in a Geely factory.

Harley-Davidson 338cc Bike Under Development With Chinese Tie Up

Harley-Davidson has decided to join hands with Zhejiang Qianjiang to make smaller 338cc motorcycles for Chinese market.

The new bike will have an engine displacement of 338cc

Harley-Davidson recently announced their tie-up with Chinese company Zhejiang Qianjiang to make smaller displacement bikes for the Chinese market. The new bike will have a 338cc engine, which is by far the smallest engine produced by Harley-Davidson.

Harley-Davidson revealed that the company picked Qianjiang due to its experience in developing premium small displacement motorcycles, their supply base and the knowledge of emerging markets. Both the companies will be co-operating in equipment and supply chain optimisation.

Harley-Davidson as a brand has been struggling to sustain its growth in USA and has seen a drop in sales and revenues over the past three years. While the Indian market is not familiar with Qianjiang motorcycles, it’s interesting to note that the company owns the Benelli brand of motorcycles.

In the four-year pact between the bike manufacturers, Qianjiang will be responsible for purchasing parts as per the relevant specifications and will assemble the motorcycles at its Wenling factory. They will also be responsible for getting Chinese certification for Harley-Davidson bikes to be sold in the local market.

The new bike will initially be sold in China, one of the world’s largest motorcycle markets, slowly expanding their sales in other Asian markets including India. It will go on sale in China by late 2020.

    Harley-Davidson 338cc Bike
    – Harley-Davidson to partner with Zhejiang Qianjiang
    – The new bike will have a small capacity 338cc engine
    – First launch in China, sales to slowly expand to other Asian markets

Geely makes the 300 in that plant, and if you put the pictures side by side you see it's the same bike: motor, frame, fender, many other details.

Updated picture. The other one I posted was actually a couple year old when they announced the new models. This one is from this week's release.

I edited the post. The Harley pix came from Harley, shown in hometown newspaper yesterday. The Benelli is straight from Benelli's site.

They don't look similar. It's the same bike...

By the way, the 300 gets good reviews for what it is. Will probably run circles around the 883. It will take some guts to bring it here and put it on the floor with "real" Harleys.

Must be pedantic me because I see differences,.......Is it a good thing either way? Time will be the big denominator in the sum up of things in the future,......

Damn similar. The single jug casting is different, but these are renders so I'd resist betting a paycheck.
Aren't Binelli's made in Pisaro, It vice China? How does a European made bike, with a Chinese owner, evade Asian import duties?

The other thing that's killing me about this is Binelli QJ is (was?) doing business in Iran (according to Wikipedia) and I'm reasonably certain US companies are forbidden from doing business with companies that do that [current sanction regime].

    Here's Lem's take:
