It's a rare moment when a lawmaker realizes that one of their ideas is daft. I think New Jersey might be the only state where pumping your own gas is illegal.

Can you imagine a "over worked" (haha) kid pumping gas in our bikes?
Gas spilling out all over a hot engine...... just picture that!

I have fueled a lot of bikes and gas cans in NJ. By-in-large the attendants realize that they are a little out of their depth when it comes to bikes and gas cans, so they let you handle your business. When it is a kid, they are usually amped to see bikes and ask questions or strike up some sort of conversation. I think most times they are ignored by drivers so they get lonely.

In Oregon it's illegal to pump your own gas also. Usually Attendants will let me fill my bike while they stand there and watch me. I've had a few that were adamant about filling my bike and of course they only ever half filled it. I usually tried not to need fuel in Oregon. :p

Actually, NJ is usually quite a bit cheaper than bordering PA, especially Phila. I just checked in Wildwood (my cousin lives there) and gas was running plus or minus $2.25. In Phila, it was about 20¢ a gallon higher.

But the chance of someone pumping gas into my DH is about the same me allowing valet parking ! ! !

I spotted one here in town yesterday at $1.87. It's been years since I saw it that low. And this is a weekend when they normally raise the prices. Must be time for yet another disaster so they have another ready made excuse to raise the prices again. That seems to be their MO.

Yes, it's for price per gallon.

No, we weren't complaining, even though those prices are for regular and we're supposed ti use Premium.

Yes, we realize, especially now that we are a net exported or oil & natural gas, the benefits that come being oil independent . . . at least the smart ones among us understand it.

I am sorry that you are paying through the nose. But, remember, you are are welcome here anytime you want . . . .

I know I might catch a little flak for this and also I’m not being political, so here goes.
When I was younger, in high school I worked at a Full Service Gas Station. One of the reasons I got into mechanics was this job. Cars, trucks, etc would come in and we’d top’em off, fill’em up and so on. We’d check all fluids, and if the oils needed to be changed, check air pressure and tire tread depth, if they needed to be rotated. Clean the windshield and empty the ashtray. Made a few extra bucks and learned how to catch my first scammers.
I believe they should bring this back, not make it mandatory, but for every other station that is built or refurbished it should be a full service station.
Look at the jobs that could be brought back( hundreds of thousands or more), school kids learning a trade, older generation not having to get out in the heat or cold to fuel their auto, younger generation not driving theirs till the thing falls apart because they have no idea how a mechanical device operates and what it entails maintenance wise.
We never did this with the motorcycles that came in. First off those guys on their cruisers were particular who touched their bikes, plus we had no idea where all the places we needed to look. We gladly supplied them with a rag, oil and such to check everything, brought them out a coke or a glass of water and said where the bathroom was, then took their cash when they were ready to leave. Those guys always looked like gang members, long hair, beards and such, but they always tipped the best and were always ready to BS about their bikes.
Please, bring back the full service stations, we are ready for it again. Hell, I’d go down in a minute as a second job.

Good idea, Will. Like you wrote, just don't make it mandatory. I think there would be a market for this...maybe not a big market but some.

I didn't look at it in that respect......I conjured up the help at a Walmart Service Center and shake my head.
I think it would fly in rural America were services are limited. Heck these kids could learn social skills on top of it. Something sorely missing in a lot of youth..... thanks to the cell phone.
