We are all good Guys,......it was off the coast and deep so I don't expect any damage to people or property here,......but it was a ripper of a long shake,.....you know how a small boat feels in a slight swell?,......just the slow rise and fall? It was something like that with a couple of big ripples thrown in for good measure and as I said,.....the longest shake I have felt in decades,......no,......EVER!,.......it may be over,....there have been aftershocks but not ones I have felt,.....I do wonder what the world is warming up to,......whether we like it or not, one day, one or two of those plates under our feet are gonna have an argument and one of them is gonna swing a right hook and the other one is gonna see stars amongst other things,......I just hope we are on the winning end and the loser is the Ocean,.......of course that then means the Pacific Islands cop the mess afterwards,......Let's face it,......when the earth cuts up real bad? EVERYTHING SUFFERS!

I have taken precautions after this event,.......I thought it best to drink my beer reserves in case they fell over and broke!
:(,.....be a shame to see it go to waste!;););)

Hey @Bubba58 !,......I am picking the quake moved the ocean floor sideways as opposed to up and down,......sideways leaves the ocean floor basically in the same place whereas a drop in the ocean floor creates a big hole for the water to drop into thus causing tsunami's,......There u go USGS!,.....how is that for a layman's description of a technical thingy!,.......:p:D,.....Do I get the job?o_O

We will be in for a fantastic view if Mt Taranaki erupts, haha. The biggest danger forr the town of Stratford, where we live, is the heat blast from a side eruption. has a geological technical term for it. They reckon the heat blast would wipe out the town. At least we wouldn't freeze to death and no need for a cremation, haha.

Pyroclastic flow is the term you are looking for @muz ,.......

Question: Are you going up to the opening of the new Indian dealer in Hamilton later this month?,......be good to catch up is all,......You never know ,.....we might get a front row seat to a new mountain range growing out off the East Coast if these plates keep banging heads,....
Remember, we will be safe as our plate gets pushed upwards, not downwards. So maybe Australia gets pushed down and @JuanPoopalot will get his toes wet!:p:p:p

Just did a tally on earthquakes off the coast of Te Araroa which is where the 7.4 quake was and in the last 22 hours there has been 18 quakes ranging from a 'small' 4.4 up to a 6.1. That's 18 quakes all in a row with no quakes interrupting the run,....Quite amazing really,.....I wonder what tonight will bring?,.....

Here is the site I watch,.....in case anyone is interested.

There has only been two other weak quakes elsewhere in Burtland in the last hour and that is rare.

Yes, just about everyone I know is going to the opening at hamilton. Free spit roast and wood fired pizza, nibbles and drinky poos too. I unfortunately will probably take my car. That way Patty can come and see and catch up with a few people we have lost touch with since moving out of Dorkland, sorry, Auckland. Must remember to take my Visa card too, haha. No that was not the word from memory for the heat blast, just off to Mr Google now, haha.

You got that right Buddy,......a whole lot of shaking going on,.....all little ones just off the East Coast every minute or so with the strongest being about 3.5. Things are either settling down or tension in the plates is building again,......it is a guessing and waiting game,......what seems strange to me is that there have been virtually NO EARTHQUAKES ON ANY OF THE OTHER FAULT LINES ANYWHERE IN THE COUNTRY,! I wonder why that is?

Maybe when things settle down on that side of the Pacific a whole lot of shaking will go on the California fault lines. All part of the Ring of Fire.

Ha! Kiwis are always trying to push us down . . . We get it.

It’s some sort of inferiority complex - tricky stuff to talk about amongst friends!!

Btw @muz - Isn’t it simply called a lateral eruption?
