Okay guys first not sure where to put this so....
Any way over the weekend got to do some great riding. The Wooly man and myself rode the same miles from start to finish but when we got back his trip meter logged 20 more miles then mine. We figured it was about a 3% difference over all the miles but still WTH? As I am at a blank about this I am going to pick your brains as why this might be, any thoughts?

I don't think that 3% indiacates anything wrong or uncalibrated. 3% could be as simple as more air in the tires.
    Think back, though...
Were one of you more inside than outside on turns, does he spin the tires in dirt, did he make any extra short trips, etc, etc?

What Dan said above plus aftermarket tires could cause a discrepancy too.
Either one of you with non-OEM tires?
Some OEM speedometers are as much as 10% incorrect.

What Ronnie and Dan said. Except for Motor Officer bikes that have calibrated speedometers, 3% difference would seem to be reasonable between your 2 bikes. Curious...do you have money on who gets the best MPG's? If so, there are "black box" fixes out there to calibrate your speedometers.

Like anything different tachs on different bikes rarely read exactly the same.

Not only is there a "pay gap" but there's a mileage gap as well

On rallies we ride a certified course to calibrate our mounts. Nobody's are spot on. Goldwings, for example, consistently run at 5% deviation -- Honda doesn't want its riders to get speeding tickets, apparently. So 3% is not unusual.

My BMW R1200CLCs tach was off about 1%, but the Speedo was off almost 10%!!
Same as Honda, BMW doesn't want it's riders getting tickets. Either that or they want their riders thinking their bikes are faster than they really are. :p

We did some gps speed testing on a trip a few years back and discovered all the HD Road Glides in our group of 4 were off. Our speedo readings said 80mph when in actuality we were going 75mph. See, this way Wooly Man could say he put in more miles on the trip. :D

P.S. Harleys have an image to maintain as all of us old HD riders know. ;)

@Bobby Jesus, Now that is funny.

@Dan_Frisbie, always check for proper tire pressure before taking off, but you did bring up something as Wooly almost always rides inside and I almost always ride outside, even if I am leading. (Habit)

@SouthernProducer, nope we never bet on those things but who ever has the most unwashed bugs on their bike wins. I usually win and that means Wooly buys gas and food the next day.

I guess I never thought about this and " ASSUMED" that humans had some kind of magic that made these thing accurate, silly me. Also this could explain why he is allows asking "How fast was you going?" Thanks guys as sometimes my gray hairs can be blond or I just don't think about these kind of things.

Just keep in mind @Gina that a lot of the people you are discussing this with are also gray hairs, white hairs or no hairs. :D

people look at the speedo? that's just weird..

As for the bugs.. you wouldn't want to look at my mirrors.. I NEVER wash them.. unless riding in the rain.. which happens often.. I clean everything on the bikes but the mirrors and my lid.. been doing that for 30+ yrs.. ?

Sorry guys that was a typo... Should have read unsmooshed bugs. In other words the entire bug intact.
